Minnesota Literacy Council Trainings

November 18, 2010

Did you know that Minnesota Literacy Council does MORE than support VISTAs?

One of the great resources that MLC has that VISTAs and their volunteers can tap into is their trainings for  literacy tutors and volunteers. Check out this list of what MLC has to offer:

1) ESL Tutor Pre-Service Training – This training is designed for volunteers who would like to tutor adults learning English or serve as a computer coach or citizenship tutor; this training is 12 hours long and is divided into 3 or 4 sessions.

2) Reading, Writing, and GED Tutor Pre-Service Training – This training is for volunteers who want to work one-to-one with an English-speaking adult student, with an advanced ESL adult student, or with a student preparing for the GED; this training is 12 hours long and divided into 3 or 4 sessions.

3) Tutor In-Service Workshops – These trainings are for current MLC or other literacy volunteers who would like to develop and improve their teaching skills and enhance their instruction.

4) Technology Trainings – These are workshops on using technology in education.

5) ABCs of Reading Training for Children’s Tutors – This is a three-hour, hands-on workshop that prepares adults to become reading tutors for children in grades K-3. The training is appropriate for classroom volunteers and tutors who work with kids in after-school programs.

6) Online Trainings – Free online courses for GED, ESL and citizenship tutors and teachers. Topics include:

  • Teaching Adults with ADHD
  • ABE/GED Classroom Volunteer Training
  • Multilevel English Language Instruction
  • Reading Assessments for Adult Basic Education
  • Using Volunteers in the Classroom
